True confessions: I’m a planner. I’m goal oriented and I’m a big picture thinker. That’s why I like the last week in the year—tucked in between Christmas and the New Year—I think that’s the perfect time to review accomplishments, renew strategies and goals, and decide what I can rinse and repeat.
As any good goal oriented planner knows, there are a number of different tools you can use to measure and evaluate your goals, your accomplishments and areas for improvement. Here are three suggestions for you to consider.
Suggestion #1: I find that using a Wheel of Life is very helpful because it is visual and easy to complete and compare with the charts you’ve done previously.
This one is from Tony Robbins:
The directions are simple:
- Imagine that the lines are a scale from 1 to 10
- Put a dot on where you are today on a scale of 1 to 10 in each of the areas.
- Next connect the dots so you can have a picture that shows where you fall in the different areas.
- Any surprises?
- Consider celebrating those areas where you score 8 and above and working on those areas where you score 4 and below.
You can replace the areas above with ones that are relevant to your business; consider how satisfied you are OR how successful you are in the following areas:
- Client acquisition
- Client retention
- Employee relationships
- Internal operations and controls
- Marketing and PR
- Social media
- Strategic thinking
Suggestion #2: Years ago I found a great list of questions (I don’t know who to attribute it to) that’s very helpful as I review and set goals. Use the list below as your guide and embellish/adapt it to your needs as I have over the years.
The important thing is to carve out time to do this undistracted. And it is really, really important to be honest and open as you answer the questions. No judgment allowed. It’s all about learning and moving forward.
Oh and being the visual person that I am, I like to use a mind map to do this.

Looking back and taking stock (the review part)
- What are your proudest moments? Why?
- What were your biggest challenges? Lessons learned? (Each challenge must have a lesson learned)
- Who became your role models? Who is still on the list from before?
- What groups did you join? Why? What do you bring to the group?
Looking forward and planning (the renew part)
- Do you need to adjust your strategic plan?
- What are your new business/industry/peer group targets?
- What are your quarterly goals? (income/client/sponsor/outreach)
Building on success (the rinse and repeat part)
What worked best? How can you tweak/improve it?
- Claiming expert status
- Awards and recognition
Suggestion #3: Join a mastermind group or work with a coach. Let’s face it, even the most goal oriented amongst us need to be held accountable. As you take stock of the past year and look at the goals you have for next year ask yourself if you can do it alone… or would it be better to have some help along the way?
